The best part about Jolie and her tattoos is she is never shy to show them off, guess she is used to the cameras, lights, and actions.

They say moments fade and what better way to showcase this than with Angelina Jolie tattoos. Just like the very first movies she featured in that have slowly vanished to history. No, not because of any other, reason but she has had them removed to create room for new ones or get rid of past memories. The most memorable tattoo she had removed was that of her former lover and husband Billy Bob. Thiswas written on her left arm alongside a black dragon. The tattoo was lasered off after their divorce in 2003. Perhaps a reason to take a lot of consideration before putting their name on your body.
It is not the only tattoo that Angelina Jolie has had covered over apparently there was a blue dragon (Yes, another one) which she says she had when intoxicated. Well, she was young back then, but still, facts are facts.
Another famous tattoo that Angelina Jolie got covered after a couple of years was her very first tattoo. It was the Japanese Kanji for the word death. She knew the meaning, but to her, it was a reminder of life and living.

The tattoos and their meanings
It would be hard to say which particular Angelina Jolie’s tattoo has had the greatest impact on her fans and fellow body art enthusiasts, but this list has all the interesting ones. Our countdown begins with;
Know your Rights
Standing right below her neck, between her shoulder blades, the statement ‘know your rights’ is hard to miss on Angelina Jolie’s body. The tattoo is written in a straight line in bold gothic letters and is evidence on the effect of music on our lives. The statement is drawn from the song know your rights by The Clash who were a great force in the British punk rock era and an inspiration to the later sounds and movements.
Just like the lyrics of the song were pretty simple but with a deeper meaning, this tattoo gets you to thinking proving art can be used too for relevance. To quote from the opening lines of the song ‘This is a public service announcement with a guitar know your rights.”

Angelina Jolie Tattoos: Geographical coordinates
A little geography class on coordinates and locations or a simple search on Google maps for already documented results, and you are ready to have a tattoo. That is exactly what Angelina Jolie has done by tattooing six different geographical coordinates on her left arm. Which coordinates are this and why have them? Well, they are the locations where her children were born (Six in total including the adopted ones) and Brad Pitt’s birthplace in Oklahoma. We all like a breakdown here they are;
- N11º 33′ 0″ E 104º 51′ 00″
- N9º 2′ 0″ E 38º 45′ 0″
- S22º 40′ 26″ E 14º 31′ 40″
- N10° 46′ 0″ E 106º 41′ 40″
- N43º 41′ 21″ E 07º 14′ 28″
- N43º 41′ 21″ E 07º 14′ 28″
- N35º 19′ 44″ W 96º 55′ 26″
The first coordinates is a place in Cambodia where Maddox her eldest son was born.
The second is in Ethiopia, Zara’s birthplace.
The third coordinates are for the location in Namibia where Shiloh was born.
The fourth is in Vietnam the birthplace of Plax.
The fifth and sixth are similar as they are for her twins (Knox and Vivienne) who were born in France.
Lastly is Brad Pitt’s place of birth in Oklahoma.

The Buddhist Pali incantation
While adopting her first son Maddox, Angelina Jolie had this tattoo done in Pathum Thani which is one of the central provinces in Thailand. It is in Khmer script which is the native language in Cambodia and is found on her left shoulder blade. The Buddhist Pali incantation was meant to protect her together with her new found son. Translated into English, it says;
‘’May your enemies run far away from you. If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always. Your beauty will be that of Apsara. Wherever you may go, many will attend, serve and protect you, surrounding you on all sides.’’

Sak Yank tattoos
Angelina Jolie seemingly cannot have enough of Buddhists and monks as just in 2016 she had three Sak Yank tattoos by Ajarn Noo Kanpaia. Ajarn Noo Kanpaia is a former monk who describes his art as Thai spiritual tattoos. Thai spiritual tattoos are said to protect you if you have the tattoos on your body. She had this tattoo while with Brad Pitt, who also had one on his stomach. These tattoos were intended to bind them together as wife and husband.
The first tattoo is a replica of a Buddhist temple symbolizing mercy on one’s self and to others.
The second is a traditional Buddhist symbol for luck and wealth.
The last one is a grid representation of the four elements namely; water, fire, wind, and earth.

A prayer for the wild at heart tattoo
This is a Tennessee William’s quote which Angelina Jolie has on her inner left arm. It reads ‘a prayer for the wild at heart kept in cages. Responding to inquiries about the tattoo she said that is her kind of prayer not just for herself but for everybody as they seek to break out from those things that make us uncomfortable (cages).
Roman Numerals
The impacts of this ancient civilization have not disappeared even in modern times with artworks like Angelina Jolie’s tattoos making them alive. Since she does not believe in superstitions, she had the Roman numerals thirteen (XIII) on her left arm. Close to it is the date May 13th, 1940 also in Roman numerals (V MCMXL) which is the date Winston Churchill gave the famous speech saying in part, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.” To Angelina Jolie this an accurate depiction of what she really believes in and a mantra that she has carried over the years.

Arabic script
Remember the tattoo Angelina Jolie had of her ex-husband Billy Bob well she found a perfect cover for it which is through an Arabic text which according to her means ‘strength of will’ while most say the translation for the word is ‘determination.’ All in all, it is a perfect replacement for a name she does not want to have on her body.

A large black cross and a Latin saying
This too is a cover of the blue tongue dragon tattoo Angelina Jolie says she did not purpose on having and so had it covered with a large black cross. Beside the cross is a Latin saying “Quod Me Nutrit Me Destruit” whose translation means ‘What nourishes me, destroys me.’
Record has it that the cross tattoo was done just a day before her marriage to Johny Lee Miler, her now ex-husband.
The Bengal tiger tattoo
This list cannot be complete without this piece of art. The Bengal Tiger tattoo, just like her Buddhist Pali incantation and Sak Yank tattoos, was done in the traditional Thailand style by hand. This is by the use of a steel rod attached to a surgical needle and a mystical ink. Angelina Jolie had this tattoo to celebrate her Cambodian citizenship with the record having it that the artist chanted an ancient hymn after completing it to bless her.
These are the most popular and renowned Angelina Jolie tattoos. However, there are many others. These include a letter M on the palm of her as a tribute to her mother (Marcheline Bertrand), Whiskey bravo on her inner right thigh, and an ‘H’ on her left wrist. In total, the body art and ideas to get from Jolie are limitless with any tattoo lover getting some motivation.
